About Fortnum and Mason
Our story dates back to 1705, when Hugh Mason started out with a small shop in St James Market and a spare room in his home. Around the same time, the Fortnum family arrived in London as skilled builders, helping to rebuild Mayfair after the Great Fire. William Fortnum, a true entrepreneur, also worked as a footman in Queen Anne’s household. It was in Mason’s spare room that William Fortnum and Hugh Mason first crossed paths, setting the foundation for what would become a lasting partnership.
