A Dutch clinical trial testing whether sildenafil—the active ingredient in Viagra—could help prevent low birth weight in babies was stopped early after a series of tragic outcomes. Nearly 100 pregnant women in the study were given the drug, and sadly, 11 babies passed away. These deaths are particularly concerning because sildenafil is already reportedly being used by expectant mothers in various parts of the world. Sildenafil works by widening blood vessels, which improves blood flow. While it's well-known as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, some doctors thought it might also benefit pregnant women whose placentas aren’t delivering enough blood and nutrients to their developing babies. This condition, called intrauterine growth restriction, results in poor fetal growth and is usually detected around 20 weeks into pregnancy via ultrasound. Earlier animal studies had suggested that sildenafil might help in such cases. The trial, which started in 2015 and was planned to run through 2020, aimed to enroll 350 women across 10 Dutch hospitals. Half were to receive sildenafil, and the other half a placebo. However, last week an independent committee halted the study after 183 women had participated, with 93 receiving sildenafil.
