About Brooklyn Brewery
Back in 1984, Steve Hindy wrapped up more than five years as the Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press, reporting on conflicts and upheavals across countries like Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Sudan. On his final night in Beirut, his hotel came under a mortar attack. He kept a still-warm piece of shrapnel as a keepsake, then packed up his family and moved back to New York City. During his time in the Middle East, Steve became friends with diplomats stationed in Saudi Arabia—a country where alcohol is banned by Islamic law. These diplomats were enthusiastic home brewers and often shared their homemade beers with him. Once back in Brooklyn, while working as a foreign news editor for Newsday, Steve started brewing beer at home. He eventually teamed up with his downstairs neighbor, banker Tom Potter, and together they launched the Brooklyn Brewery. That piece of shrapnel still sits on Steve’s desk, a constant reminder of his experiences overseas and the journey that led him to craft brewing.
