About Harbord Bakery
Before she became Mrs. Kosower—the beloved bubie always behind the bakery counter—Golda Elster had her own story. Born in 1911 in Amstev, Poland, a small Jewish village known as a shtetl, Golda was the second oldest of seven siblings: Fishl, Sally, Pessi, Dobra, Geyla, and Hana. When she was just 15, her family chose her to immigrate to Canada. In 1927, she arrived and settled on Lippincott Street with her aunt, uncle, and grandmother, who had moved there a few years earlier.
