The pub was built back in 1930 by Bill and Henrietta Pierce, and their story—captured in Elisabeth George’s 1946 book *Read 2 at Daly Waters*—paints a vivid picture of what life was like for early settlers in the outback. Over the years, the pub has seen its fair share of drama: from murders and shootouts right on the main street to cattle stampeding through town and the occasional rowdy brawl. At one point, local station owners even threatened to burn it down or bulldoze it to keep the ringers from riding into town, which is why you’ll still find an old bathtub and a rail out front to hitch horses to. Nowadays, the only shootouts happen during Happy Hour at the bar, and the only fights are between groups of Happy Jacks—those cheeky local birds. If you ever find yourself alone in the pub late at night, you might get that eerie feeling, like the hairs on the back of your neck are standing up. Things sometimes mysteriously move around in the kitchen—and it’s definitely not the chef!
