About Joe's Pub
The Public Theater is unique in New York City for offering a balanced mix of Shakespeare and classic plays, musicals, contemporary works, and experimental pieces. It champions theater as a vital cultural force that sparks important conversations about today’s issues. This commitment to core democratic values was established by its visionary founder, Joseph Papp, and continues to shape everything The Public does. Founded nearly 60 years ago as one of the country’s first nonprofit theaters, The Public has become a model for similar organizations across the nation, both in mission and programming. It reaches one of the largest and most diverse audiences in New York City through multiple venues—including the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, its historic downtown home with five theaters plus Joe’s Pub, and the Mobile Shakespeare Unit, which brings Shakespeare productions to underserved communities throughout the city’s five boroughs. Since 1962, the Delacorte Theater has welcomed over 5 million people to free performances. Before that, starting in 1954, Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival—the foundation of The Public Theater—brought free Shakespeare productions to various locations like churches, parks, and even through a traveling mobile theater, making theater accessible to all.
