About The Library at the Public
The Public Theater is truly theater for everyone—created by artists and driven by the community. Founded over 60 years ago by the visionary Joe Papp, it’s a place where inclusivity and democracy aren’t just goals, but core values. The Public sees theater as a vital cultural force that belongs to all of us. Led by Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, The Public offers a diverse range of programming. This includes an annual season of new plays and musicals at its historic home in Astor Place, the beloved Free Shakespeare in the Park at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater, and The Mobile Unit, which brings performances to neighborhoods across all five boroughs. Other initiatives like Public Forum, Under the Radar, Public Studio, Public Works, the Public Shakespeare Initiative, and Joe’s Pub all contribute to a vibrant, city-wide cultural experience. Since its groundbreaking production of HAIR in 1967, The Public has been at the forefront of shaping American theater. Today, it’s known worldwide, with hits like the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda and John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons originating there. Its influence extends beyond New York, with productions touring across the country and internationally. Over the years, The Public has earned numerous accolades, including 59 Tony Awards, 169 Obie Awards, and many more, reflecting its lasting impact on the arts and culture scene.
